Melbourne’s history plays an important role in the design and aesthetic of the venue. The location has strongly influenced the venue’s architecture with the old wharf incorporated into the design, including timber from the original wharf, dating back 80 years. The walls feature photographs of early life in Melbourne inspired by writings from the diary of John Batman.
Former owner John Ahern of The Publican Group retrieved the existing original timber from the Wharf and it is now part of the façade of the front bar.
In 2020 he told Spice Hotel and Venue News: “I saw the materials heading off to the tip and managed to jump in and stop them taking it. The historical significance of the wharf is fascinating and the timber brings a wharf feel to the front of the bar.”
